Wrentham State Forest, located in northern Massachusetts, is a beautiful setting for all of the family to ride. The woods here are well preserved and provide a very scenic area to explore by bike.
Wrentham is located in Essex County and is a small city in the Essex Metroplex with Wrentham State Forest mountain biking the center of attention.
The forest offers many biking and hiking trails. This area is ideal for families with small children, and is also open to the public. You can walk along the many trails like the pinnacle trail, cycle along the easy paved biking trails on red fox trail loop, or go into the forest for some of the more challenging trails.
The Wrentham Forest covers 1,000 acres and is used year round for hiking, bicycling, and running. The trails are not maintained, and do need regular maintenance. The small population makes it easy to do the trail maintenance yourself, although some trail improvements are being made for more people to enjoy the trail on their new Merida bikes.
Cycling in the forest is fairly easy. In fact, most of the biking and hiking trails have easy cycling sections. Other sections have gentle rolling sections to encourage biking, and the most challenging sections are on rolling hills or rolling terrain.
The trails are wide and often have large portions that are open to the public with gravel parking area on Taunton Street. The roads are not well maintained, and are a bit rough. The trail maintenance crews wear hardhats with the Essex County Department of Parks and Recreation. You may need to ask some of the staff to help you do the trail maintenance.
These trails are well maintained on the Warner Trail, a 30-mile hiking trail that travels through Norfolk County down to Rhode Island, but it would be nice to have the infrastructure in place for biking and hiking, especially during the busy spring season. This would make for a more enjoyable experience. Each year the trails are improved for the next hiking season. The volunteers put in many hours each year to make sure that the trails are safe, and comfortable for all to enjoy.
First of all, make sure that the bike is safe and secure. Do not leave your bike near a tree or on an unstable surface. Be sure to lock the bike and keep the vehicle or other animal out of the area.
When on the bicycle, keep to the right of traffic when possible. Some of the trees and other objects in the forest can be very large, and can be hard to see on the bicycle.
If you are heading back to the parking area, make sure to keep your route clear of any obstacles, such as trees, large rocks, or concrete parking spaces. Avoid off-road areas, and avoid the waterfall.
Wrentham State Forest is located in a beautiful place, with a great selection of biking and hiking trails. When you are done exploring, take the children out for a trip to the many ponds or open fields, and you will have a great time.
